Interventionist Listing

Following are letters of introduction and contact information for Victoria-area autism interventionists and tutors. If you are interested in finding out more about any of these individuals, please contact them at their phone numbers or email addresses provided.

Please note: The individuals listed here are not endorsed or screened by VSCA. It is up to the families contacting them to assure their suitability.

I have been working with people with disabilites for the past 7 years and have quite a bit of experience with children with autism. I am two courses shy of obtaining my BA in General Studies through Thompson River University (distance), with my two focuses being English and Psychology. I currently work for the school board as an ABA Therapist. My position with the school board allows me to deliver curriculum targeting my clients’ strengths and weaknesses, while improvising, adapting, and thinking on my feet. I also have experience in helping to find work experiences (sometimes paid, sometimes volunteer) for my clients and assisting and adapting their duties to suit their abilities.

I believe that the best approach in helping a person with disabilities flourish is to provide unconditional support and consistency among everyone. Furthermore, I know that each client is different and I strive to find the approach and reinforcers tailored to each individual.

I really look forward to discussing how we can help your loved one!

I am available to tutor children with autism in order to encourage, guide, and support the learning of computer skills and/or introductory computer programming.  I am a strong believer in nurturing technology-related interests among youth with autism, particularly girls.  As a career software developer, I have come to recognize the benefits that many of today's software-related jobs offer individuals with autism and, in turn, the myriad of assets these individuals' particular interests and talents may bring to employers in the tech sector.  For example, I am inspired by the story of Denmark's Specialisterne.

I have 3 years of experience teaching Computer Science at the university undergraduate level, as well as experience coordinating and teaching computer camp programs for school children in grades 4 through 12.  If you have a child interested in computers and technology, I'm interested in helping make their interaction with technology even more fun, educational, and rewarding !!

I am an art therapist in private practice with many years experience providing art therapy for children and youth with autism spectrum disorders and other learning, developmental and emotional challenges.

Art therapy is particularly beneficial for children with autism spectrum diagnoses.  A trained art therapist can help children use their relative strengths in visual processing to help with social, emotional and learning goals.  Art making in art therapy provides appropriate sensory and tactile experiences for children which can facilitate nonverbal and verbal learning,  and increase and model appropriate  social interaction within a therapeutic relationship,  and provide enjoyable visual, concrete, hands-on therapy in a fun and adaptable environment.

I am a BC-Certified Teacher with extensive experience and training in working with children with special needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am available during school hours (until 4pm) to tutor or support children with ASD. I have 7 years experience tutoring a variety of children, 3 years experience as a Special Student Assistant with School District 61, 2 years experience as a summer school teacher in a class of 4 developmentally-challenged students including 2 autistic students, and 5 years experience as a classroom elementary teacher. I can also teach French. I have taken many workshops, attended conferences, and taken courses learning about a variety of special needs including ASD. I have experience and training in crisis intervention and behaviour management. I am currently tutoring several children enrolled as homelearners with SelfDesign.

I feel my strength is in my ability to respect and honour children and meet them where they're at - getting to know them and how best to assist them to reach their full potential and ultimately to be happy. For example, the parents who have contacted me about tutoring their children enrolled with SelfDesign are attracted to my respect for and understanding of self-directed learning. I am happy to adopt the philosophy/approach you feel is best for your child (from unschooling to structured learning). I am friendly, fun, and patient. I am centrally-located in a beautiful heritage home on the edge of downtown. Registered with Child Care Resource and Referral.

I am a 26 year old female with 2 years experience working as an ABA interventionist. I have obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. My last two years of study focused heavily on infant development, childhood behavioral and developmental disorders, clinical support and progress reports.

I was recently employed at the Children’s Therapy and Family Resource Centre as a Behavior Assistant supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. There I performed behavioral intervention with a total of 8 children over the course of 2 years. I worked closely with the Behavior Consultant, as well as the Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Teachers/Daycare Supervisors to deliver each child’s personal program plan. I have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and a valid First Aid certificate.

I have a degree in Psychology from the University of Victoria and have been working with children and young adults with challenging behaviors for 12 years.  In the last three years I have been specifically working with children and youth with Autism.

I am a trained Applied Behavioral Analysis therapist, have extensive experience with speech therapy and articulation and do natural environmental teaching. I also provide social skills training that includes natural environmental teaching, social stories, comic strip conversations, and video modeling. Recently I took a course in teaching sexual health to individuals with autism.  I have a vast knowledge of counseling techniques that compliments my intervention skills and helps the children and young adults I work with to cope with the anxiety and frustration issues that are often related to them having autism.

My name is Paula. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology this previous summer, and I intend to pursue graduate school in the field within the next several years. In the summer of 2008 I worked at a day camp for children with special needs, where I worked both one on one and in group environments with children on the autism spectrum.

I am an active respite worker through the Community Respite Program. As a respite worker, I have taken part in intensive training in order to provide care for children with a wide range of cognitive and physical disabilities.

I am a very patient and empathetic individual, and although I do not have direct experience as an interventionist, I believe that my experience would aid me in becoming a good interventionist.

I spent two summers working as a camp counselor at Queen Alexandra Hospital, where I was the caregiver for a number of children with autism spectrum disorder and behavior challenges. I also worked for a number of years at local recreation centres as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.

I am an alumnus of Uvic, with a degree in Humanities, and I'm currently attending the Victoria Conservatory to study music. I am a patient and empathetic person with experience working with autistic children and young adults and would be happy to work in a caregiving situation this summer. Thanks for your interest.

I am currently completing my Master’s in Applied Psychology with a specialization in counseling psychology and have worked with three  individuals with autism/Asperger’s syndrome since 2008. I am currently on the board of Directors for the Phoenix Human Service Association. As a board, we provide governance of a community based social services agency serving people in need.

I have also worked as a coach with Kelly’s Kids Triathlon Team based in Victoria and volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Society in Victoria. I am currently working part time in a research role with the provincial government. I have a passion for working with children and would welcome the opportunity to contribute to the society as an interventionist.

I have been working with a teenaged Autistic girl for the past two years, and have built a great relationship with her. We have worked on her verbal communication and social behaviour skills, and have had a lot of fun during the process! I am positive, enthusiastic, patient and respectful, all of the traits required to help those in need. I love working with children, and planning activities that they enjoy: swimming, shopping, biking, crafts... Every child is different and I cater to their interests as best I can. I also have some experience working with two Autistic brothers, both who showed very different traits from the other.

I have several years experience in working with children, teens and adults with autism in a variety of settings including the classroom, community, summer camp, family homes and my own home.  I have a degree in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria.  I love developing relationships with children and families and helping to facilitate growth, language development, self-esteem and independence.

I believe every person with autism is a unique individual with personal strengths that can be nurtured to help overcome some of the challenges that autism can present.  I love working with children with autism because it is deeply rewarding, challenging, stimulating, creative and FUN work.
